„Bosporus Beats – Blicke auf Istanbul von 1500 bis 1800“ im Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin
Wenn Perspektiven sich begegnen
Diese Kooperation begann nicht mit einem formellen Antrag, sondern mit einer offenen Frage: Wie verändern sich Ausstellungen, wenn man bereit ist, Wissen zu teilen – und zugleich wirklich zuzuhören?
Die Kuratorin Dr. Mailena Mallach des Kupferstichkabinetts war neugierig darauf, andere Perspektiven auf die eigene Sammlung und das Ausstellungskonzept einzuladen. Auf Stimmen von außen, auf Fragen, die nicht aus der Kunstgeschichte allein kommen, und auf einen Austausch, der nicht bei Expertise endet, sondern beim gemeinsamen Nachdenken beginnt. Genau hier trafen sich die Anliegen des Kupferstichkabinetts und des TAM Museums.
Im Gespräch stießen wir auf eine überraschende Verbindung: Die Stiche von Antoine Ignace Melling, heute Teil der Ausstellung „Bosporus Beats“, begegneten uns bereits bei unseren Recherchen zu einem Projekt mit dem Münchner Stadtmuseum. Mellings Stiche waren 1959 in München Teil einer inzwischen fast vergessenen Ausstellung einer Malerin und Volkskunstsammlerin aus der Türkai – damals als Kulisse gedacht, heute als Ausgangspunkt für neue Fragen. Wieder einmal merkten wir, welches kreative Potenzial entsteht, wenn man Museumsobjekte nicht als abgeschlossene Wissenseinheiten begreift, sondern zum Anlass nimmt, um Menschen und Institutionen über die Zeiten hinweg miteinander ins Gespräch zu bringen.
Aus dieser gemeinsamen Neugier heraus entstand die Kooperation des TAM Museums mit dem Kupferstichkabinett der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin. Im Rahmen eines Outreach-Programms zur Ausstellung „Bosporus Beats – Blicke auf Istanbul von 1500 bis 1800“ haben wir ein auf die Ausstellung abgestimmtes Vermittlungsprogramm entwickelt, das historische Perspektiven auf Istanbul mit zeitgenössischen Fragen zu Identität, Blickregimen und Erinnerungskultur verbindet. Es ist ein Experimentierraum dafür, wie wir Geschichten und Kunstwerke anders vermitteln, wie wir andere Zugänge eröffnen – und wie Museen damit auch ein anderes, vielfältigeres Publikum erreichen können.
Die Kooperation umfasst mehrere Formate, die Ausstellung, Vermittlung, Austausch und Partizipation miteinander verschränken:
Ausstellungseröffnung
Zur feierlichen Eröffnung der Ausstellung am 12. Februar um 18:00 Uhr im Kupferstichkabinett wird Gülşah Stapel, Co-Gründerin des TAM Museums, eines der Grußworte sprechen.
Die Ausstellung beleuchtet Darstellungen Istanbuls vom 16. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert und fragt nach Perspektiven, Zuschreibungen und kulturellen Verflechtungen zwischen Europa und dem Osmanischen Reich.

„Antoine Ignace Melling – Ein Europäer in Istanbul im 18. Jahrhundert“
Orhan Pamuk widmete den Darstellungen der Metropole am Bosporus durch den Künstler Antoine Ignace Melling ein ganzes Kapitel und schrieb: „Melling blickte nicht von außen auf Istanbul, sondern von innen“ (aus: Istanbul – Erinnerungen an eine Stadt). Nach einem Gang durch die Ausstellung „Bosporus Beats“ geht die Kuratorin auf die biografischen und künstlerischen Aspekte des außergewöhnlichen Lebens von Melling ein und stellt weitere Originale im Studiensaal der Kunstbibliothek vor. Im Gespräch wollen wir gemeinsam Perspektiven oder Erinnerungen teilen und miteinander verschränken sowie kuratorische Aspekte der Ausstellung diskutieren.

Dr. Mailena Mallach ist Kunsthistorikerin und Kuratorin für die deutsche Kunst auf Papier bis 1800 sowie die topografische Sammlung am Kupferstichkabinett der Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz. Ihre aktuelle Ausstellung „Bosporus Beats“ beleuchtet den eigenen Bestand zur „türkischen“ Figur und widmet sich dem Thema Perspektive.
Vermittlungs- und Outreachprogramme
Ein zentraler Bestandteil der Kooperation sind zwei partizipative Vermittlungsformate:
Beat the Name – Kunstwerke neu benennen
In diesem Workshop hinterfragen Teilnehmende nach einer Kuratorinnenführung gemeinsam die Titel ausgewählter Kunstwerke und entwickeln neue Bezeichnungen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Sprache, Wahrnehmung und Perspektive – spielerisch, dialogisch und offen für Mehrsprachigkeit.
Exklusiv für TAM Angels ist ein Workshop am 17. März 2026 von 15:00 bis 17:30 Uhr reserviert. Wegen begrenzter Platzzahl bitten wir um Anmeldung unter contact@tam-museum.de. Weitere Termine nach Absprache.

In Zusammenarbeit mit der Schriftstellerin Dilek Güngör entstehen Schreibworkshops für Schüler:innen und Gruppen. Ausgehend von den ausgestellten Werken werden Fragen zu Identität, Stereotypen, Blicken und eigenen Prägungen literarisch und kreativ bearbeitet.

Berlin Kupferstichkabinett’te gerçekleştirilen “Bosporus Beats – 1500’den 1800’e İstanbul’a Bakış” sergisi kapsamında işbirliği.
Bakış açıları buluştuğunda
Bu iş birliği resmi bir teklifle değil, ucu açık bir soruyla başladı: Bilginizi paylaşmaya - ve aynı zamanda gerçekten dinlemeye - hazır olduğunuzda, sergiler nasıl değişir?
Kupferstichkabinett küratörü Dr. Mailena Mallach, müze koleksiyonuna ve sergi konseptine farklı bakış açılarını davet etme konusunda oldukça istekliydi . Asıl merak ettiği; dışarıdan gelen sesler, sadece sanat tarihiyle sınırlı kalmayan sorular ve uzmanlıkla bitmeyip birlikte düşünerek başlayan bir fikir alışverişiydi. İşte bu noktada, Kupferstichkabinett ve TAM Müzesi’nin düşünceleri ortak bir yerde buluştu.
Sohbetlerimiz sırasında şaşırtıcı bir bağlantıyla karşılaştık: Şu an `Bosporus Beats´ sergisinde yer alan Antoine Ignace Melling gravürleri, Münih Şehir Müzesi ile yürüttüğümüz bir proje araştırmasında zaten dikkatimizi çekmişti. Melling’in gravürleri, 1959 yılında Münih’te, Türkiye´den bir ressam ve halk sanatı koleksiyoneri tarafından açılan ve şimdilerde neredeyse unutulmuş olan bir serginin parçasıydı. O dönemde sadece bir “arka plan” olarak tasarlanan bu eserler, bugün bizim için yeni soruların çıkış noktası haline geldi. Böylece, müze nesnelerini sadece sınırları çizili birer bilgi kaynağı olarak değil de, insanları ve kurumları zamanın ötesinde buluşturan birer vesile olarak gördüğümüzde, nasıl bir yaratıcı potansiyelin açığa çıktığını bir kez daha anladık.
Bu ortak merak, TAM Müzesi ile Berlin Devlet Müzeleri’ne bağlı Kupferstichkabinett´i bir araya getirdi. “Bosporus Beats – 1500’den 1800’e İstanbul’a Bakış” kapsamında, bu sergiye özel bir eğitim programı geliştirdik.
Bu program İstanbul'a dair tarihsel perspektifleri; kimlik, bakış rejimleri ve anma kültürü üzerine çağdaş sorularla birleştiriyor.

aradığımız, yeni yaklaşımlara kapılar araladığımız ve böylece müzelerin nasıl daha geniş, daha renkli kitlelerle buluşabileceğini keşfettiğimiz deneysel bir alan.

Sergi Açılışı
12 Şubat tarihinde saat 18:00'de Kupferstichkabinett'te gerçekleşecek serginin açılışında, TAM Müzesi´nin kurucu ortağı Gülşah Stapel açılış konuşmalarından birini yapacak.
Sergi, 16. yüzyıldan 18. yüzyıla kadar İstanbul tasvirlerine ışık tutuyor ve Avrupa ile Osmanlı İmparatorluğu arasındaki perspektifleri, atıfları ve kültürel etkileşimleri sorguluyor.

Dr. Mailena Mallach ile Rehberli Tur, Söyleşi ve Sahne Arkasına Bakış: `Antoine Ignace Melling – 18. Yüzyılda İstanbul’da Bir Avrupalı´
Yazar Orhan Pamuk, Antoine Ignace Melling’in Boğaziçi metropolünü tasvir ettiği eserlerine koca bir bölüm ayırmış ve şöyle yazmıştı: “Melling, İstanbul’a dışarıdan değil, içeriden bakmıştı” (İstanbul – Hatıralar ve Şehir’den).
“Bosporus Beats” sergisinde bir gezintinin ardından küratör, Melling’in sıra dışı yaşamının hem biyografik hem de sanatsal duraklarına odaklanacak; ayrıca Sanat Kütüphanesi’nin çalışma odasında sanatçıya ait diğer özgün eserleri de gün yüzüne çıkaracak. Sohbetimiz sırasında farklı bakış açılarını ve anıları paylaşacak ve iç içe geçirecek, serginin küratoryal mutfağını hep birlikte konuşacağız.

Dr. Mailena Mallach, bir sanat tarihçisi olmanın yanı sıra, Prusya Kültür Mirası Vakfı bünyesindeki Kupferstichkabinett´de 1800 öncesi Alman kâğıt işleri ve topografik koleksiyonun küratörlüğünü yürütmektedir. Güncel sergisi “Bosporus Beats”, kurumun kendi envanterindeki “Türk” figürüne odaklanırken, bakış açılarını da inceliyor.

‘Bosporus Beats – Views of Istanbul from 1500 to 1800’ at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin.
When perspectives meet
This collaboration did not begin with a formal proposal, but with an open question: How do exhibitions change when you are willing to share knowledge – and, at the same time, truly listen?
Curator Dr Mailena Mallach of the Kupferstichkabinett was keen to invite other perspectives on the musem’s collection and exhibition concept. She was interested in voices from outside, in questions that do not come from art history alone, and in an exchange that does not end with expertise but begins with thinking together. And it is here where the concerns of the Kupferstichkabinett and the TAM Museum converged.
During our discussions, we came across a surprising connection: the engravings by Antoine Ignace Melling, now part of the exhibition ‘Bosporus Beats’, had already come to our attention in our research for a project with the Munich City Museum. In 1959, Melling's engravings were part of a now almost forgotten exhibition by a Turkish painter and folk art collector in Munich. What was intended as a backdrop at the time, now became a starting point for new questions. Once again, we realised the creative potential that arises when museum objects are not understood as closed units of knowledge, but as an opportunity to bring people and institutions together across time.
This shared curiosity led to the collaboration between the TAM Museum and the Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) of the Berlin State Museums. As part of an outreach programme for the exhibition ‘Bosporus Beats – Views of Istanbul from 1500 to 1800’, we have developed an educational programme tailored to the exhibition. It brings historical perspectives on Istanbul into dialogue with contemporary questions of identity, regimes of looking, and cultures of memory. It is an experimental space for exploring how we can communicate stories and works of art differently, how we can open up new approaches – and how museums can thereby reach a broader, more diverse audience.
The collaboration encompasses several formats that interweave exhibition, education, exchange and participation:
Exhibition opening
Gülşah Stapel, co-founder of the TAM Museum, will give one of the welcoming speeches at the exhibition's grand opening on 12 February at 6 pm at the Kupferstichkabinett.
The exhibition highlights depictions of Istanbul from the 16th to the 18th century and explores perspectives, attributions, and cultural interconnections between Europe and the Ottoman Empire.

‘Antoine Ignace Melling – A European in Istanbul in the 18th Century’
The writer Orhan Pamuk devoted an entire chapter to the depictions of the Bosphorus metropolis by the artist Antoine Ignace Melling and wrote: ‘Melling did not look at Istanbul from the outside, but from within’ (from Istanbul – Memories of a City).
Following a walk through the exhibition ‘Bosporus Beats’, the curator will explore the biographical and artistic aspects of Melling’s extraordinary life and present additional original works in the study room of the Art Library. In conversation, we will share and interweave perspectives and memories and discuss curatorial aspects of the exhibition together.

Dr. Mailena Mallach is an art historian and curator for German works on paper up to 1800 as well as for the topographical collection at the Kupferstichkabinett of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz. Her current exhibition ‘Bosporus Beats’ focuses on the institution’s own holdings related to the ‘Turkish’ figure and explores questions of perspective.

Two participatory education formats are a central component of the collaboration:
Beat the Name – Renaming Artworks
In this workshop, following a guided tour by a curator, participants will collectively question the titles of selected artworks and develop new names for them. The focus will be on language, perception, and perspective – in a playful, dialogical, and multilingual manner.

I see something you don't see! – Creative writing workshops
In collaboration with author Dilek Güngör, writing workshops for schoolchildren and groups are being offered. Based on the exhibited works, questions about identity, stereotypes, perceptions, and personal influences are explored in a literary and creative way.

Both formats are free of charge and are aimed at school classes, youth and adult groups, and community initiatives.
With this cooperation, the TAM Museum combines historical research, contemporary communication, and participatory practice. Together with the Kupferstichkabinett, we are opening up spaces for new approaches to art, history, and the complex interrelationships between the German-speaking world and the region around present-day Turkey – curious, dialogical and on an equal footing.
